Faculty Share the Mistakes they Made as Beginning Teachers

Teaching Mistakes from the College Classroom

Think back to your first few years of teaching. If you’re like most educators, you probably made your share of mistakes. Maybe you were too strict … or not strict enough. Perhaps you were so absorbed delivering your course content that you didn’t realize half the class was completely lost. Or maybe you made assumptions about your students that later proved to be false. You’re not alone.

Teaching Mistakes from the College Classroom features 15 reflective essays from instructors who were generous enough to share their early-career missteps in hopes that others can learn from their mistakes.

To participate, you will need to use your SouthSeattle.EDU or a gmail address.
  1. First, to join in the "hangout", make sure you have a Google+ account (see Google+ below) and sign in.
  2. Then, email Rebecca (rmccarthy@southseattle.edu) with your Southseattle.edu (or gmail address that is associated with your google+ account).  From there, Rebecca will send you an "invite" to join the her in a live "hangout" session. It's that easy!
Google+ (the social network)
To participate in Hangouts, you have to activate your Google+ tools. This is a simple process and the service is linked to your Google Apps for Education (GA4E) account!

Rebecca has received concern about having to provide a birth date and proclaim your gender when signing up for Google+.  Please note that Google+ is an age restricted site, because of the potential for adult content and or language. As such, Google asks us for our birth dates - but this can be hidden from public view in your profile.  Regarding gender, please be assured that you can choose "other" as a gender identification.

To take advantage of Rebecca's generous offer to provide online Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) support via G+'s "Hangout" you will need the following:

10 Techie Icebreakers!

posted Apr 9, 2013, 11:35 AM by Sara Newman   [ updated Apr 9, 2013, 11:50 AM ]

Icebreakers are " discussion questions or activities used to help participants relax and ease
into a group meeting or learning situation"

Icebreakers are very important in the learning-teaching process that takes place within the classroom (online virtually or face-2-face). They can help in creating and maintaining a healthy and successful learning environment for students and are also the best warm-ups to get students engaged in a learning task.

  1. Have students create a Pinterest board with 10 pins that summarizes them.
  2. Ask students to create a 30 second podcast that introduces themselves. Then allow students to present them or play them on separate devices as an audio gallery.
  3. Create a classroom blog (using Google Apps for Education (SSCC GA4E) accounts - which all students have at South) and ask each student to write a blog post introducing themselves to the rest of the classroom.
  4. Have students create a quick comic strip to describe themselves or recreate a funny moment in their lives.
  5. Use PollEverywhere or Socrative to ask students interesting questions and get to know them as a class, like their favorite subjects, bands or TV shows.
  6. Use GoogleForms  to survey students about their interests, academic inclinations, and background info – a 21st century alternative to the “Getting to Know You” info sheet!
  7. Have students create word clouds to describe themselves and share with the rest of the class.
  8. Have students go on a QR code scavenger hunt in teams to get to know each other and learn about your classroom rules in a fun, engaging way.
  9. Ask students to create their own Voki avatars that introduce themselves to the class. Encourage them to be creative with the backgrounds, characters and details of the avatar to reflect their own personalities and preferences.
  10. Have students create graffiti online that speaks to their interests and personalities and share with the class.
  11. Have students create mashup videos of themselves with Weavly to introduce their interests to the class.
Even more ideas!
