Rick Downs, Ph.D.,  Math Department

Rick Downs is a tenured math professor at South Seattle College with more than twenty years of teaching experience. He primarily teaches college-level math and has additional experience teaching physics, robotics and engineering. In addition to teaching full-time, he also serves as a Co-PI for the college’s current NSF grant, “ReadySetTransfer!” that is aimed at increasing the number of students persisting in STEM courses and transferring to four-year institutions. The program was recognized as a 2015 Innovation of the Year from the League for Innovation.

Rick received a Bachelors from the University of Minnesota in Aerospace Engineering, a Masters from Oregon State University in Ocean Engineering, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Mechanical Engineering. Current interests include increasing the use of active learning at South Seattle and investigating ways to introduce interdisciplinary teaching in math and science.
