Panopto Now Requires the 4.9 Recorder for PCs

posted Jul 27, 2015, 11:08 AM by

As of July 24, Windows users will need to be using the 4.9 version of the Panopto recorder.

If you are using Panopto in your classroom or office to record media, you will need to request that IT Services install the new recorder on your computer.

You can check your version of the Panopto Recorder, once you have it open,

You can contact IT Services here.

To check the version of the recorder on your computer, you will need to open the Control Panel and select “Programs and Features." Then scroll down the list until you find Panopto Recorder. The version number is located in the far right column. Your version number needs to start with 4.9

Using Panopto With Chrome

posted Apr 16, 2015, 2:50 PM by   [ updated Apr 16, 2015, 2:51 PM ]

Recent versions of Chrome have disabled the Silverlight plugin by default. Panopto relies on Silverlight for viewing legacy sessions in the Panopto viewer (sessions created with versions of the Panopto recorder numbered 4.6 and older), and for using the Panopto video editor.

You can read more about re-enabling Silverlight in Chrome (Windows only), here: Enabling Silverlight Plugin (NPAPI Plugins) in Chrome

Mac users should use a different browser, as the Panopto experience is significantly limited in Chrome for Mac.

How to add permissions so students can view videos from a previous course

This method will not add the videos from a previous course into your current course, but if you have linked to or embedded Panopto videos in your course, this should allow students in your current course to view those videos that you created in a previous course:

SSC Tegrity to Panopto Conversion *finally* complete!

posted Nov 7, 2014, 9:41 PM by Sara Newman   [ updated Nov 7, 2014, 9:41 PM ]

The following is a copy of the email broadcast issued to all South faculty on 11/07/2014

Hi everyone--

If you're looking for videos that you created in Tegrity, you should now be able to access them through Panopto in Canvas.

This is true (up to a point) even if you created the videos for a course that was never in Canvas. Tegrity videos that were converted go back through 2011 (as far as I could see). If you had a private Tegrity course, I also reassociated it with your account, unless there were only one or two videos that were less than 30 seconds--there were a lot of those. Also, if you don't have instructor access in Canvas, I wasn't able to reassociate any Tegrity videos with your account.

To access Tegrity videos:
  1. Log into Canvas
  2. Open one of your courses
  3. Open the Panopto Recordings tab
  4. Within the Panopto interface, your old folders should now be available in the left-hand list of folders.
To move videos from an old folder into a current course, follow the instructions located here:

If there's something that you were counting on, and you don't see it, let me know. I might be able to locate it for you.

Panopto - Upgrade & Server disruption (Sat Nov 22 5pm - 8pm)

posted Nov 3, 2014, 2:51 PM by Sara Newman

FYI from Panopto

All cloud-hosted Panopto customers will be upgraded to our latest release scheduled for Saturday, November 22. Once the upgrade is complete, we will notify everyone.

Below are details on the upgrade process and its impact:

  • Panopto hosted servers will be down on Saturday, November 22, at 8:00pm EDT for up to 3 hours. We expect only a short interruption for finding and viewing sessions during this time, with a longer interruption for processing new sessions.
  • Recorder clients will still be able to record offline and upload later, but there may be brief delays before the recordings are available for viewing.
  • Your Windows clients, Mac clients, and remote recorders will not be required to upgrade.
  • We will be sending a separate email next week with more information about some of the upcoming changes.

We will send a link to a full change log after the upgrade has been completed.

Update re: Tegrity to Panopto conversion

posted Oct 29, 2014, 9:48 AM by Sara Newman

Panopto, the company, has been converting terabytes of Tegrity recordings for 33 Washington state colleges and we've now received a list of ours. We now need to examine and implement instructions we've been provided to manage their lengthy list and distribution tasks.  We're hoping to have something to announce by week 8 of our fall quarter.
Thank you,

Teacher: You need to setup an assignment dropbox to provide students with recording rights and the "download recorder" link for the proctoring recordings you're requiring of them: NOTE: This link is first page of a module. Subsequent pages contain information on configuring the recorder, logging in to the recorder, and basic recording.

Important reminders regarding SBCTC's move from Tegrity to Panopto

Tegrity videos created before end of Spring quarter 2014 are being converted (by Panopto) from your old Tegrity account to your new Panopto account.  SBCTC (Washington State Board Community Technical Colleges - aka state board) is "out of contract" with Tegrity -- however, Tegrity has kindly continued to keep all videos "available to access" until the end of August 2014.
Tegrity to Panopto - Road Map

Please do not make any new videos in Tegrity as (new) videos will not be converted over to your new Panopto account.  Use your Panopto (via your Canvas account) to create new videos, please.

Only the Tegrity videos created before end of Spring quarter (2014), are being converted into Panopto accounts. Anything made in Tegrity after end of Spring quarter will not be converted.

We do not have a conversion ETA from state board, as of yet. But we do know they (Panopto) are working on a huge conversion job for all of us as quickly as they can.

If you cannot wait for the conversion of your Tegrity videos into your Panopto account you can find steps for moving your own Tegrity videos to your computer and then up into your Panopto account via South's Panopto training and resources.

South's best Panopto information (most current news and links to training and resources) are maintained here on this website
