Hi All,
I am having difficulty with the grading program on Hawkes. Although the scores are all reflecting your correct pointscores,
the final grades are not correct al all! Hence, later tonight I will post the grades on this site on the Grades/Grading page.
Happy Holidays and have a great Winter Break!

Hi All,
Here is it, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and the night before the final exam testing window opens. The final exams have been placed in, or sent to, the proctoring and testing centers as well as to the proctors. Information regarding the final is provided in the past few comments (see below). The grades will be submitted to Registration by Tuesday, December 21st. Your grade should be showing on your Progress Report on the Hawkes site around that time (or earlier). Enjoy your Winter Break!
Happy Holidays!

Hi All,
A problem has come up this quarter...If you do the certifies off-line and then, later, enter them into the system (on your Progress Report page you can submit these certifies so that they count for your grade), the correct completion date is not recorded, only the submission date will show up. So, I have decided to change the grading for the certifies. All completed certifies will be given a full 10 points. However, you must complete them all by December 8th, the first day of the final exam testing window for them to count. This way no matter when you completed or submitted the certify, you will get credit. Any certifies submitted or completed after Dec. 8th will not count as part of your grade.
We have the Test #4 Retake and Test #5 testing windows starting this Wednesday, Dec. 1st, through Monday, Dec. 6th. The Final Exam testing window is Wednesday, Dec. 8th, through Monday, Dec. 13th.
A few words about the final exam...the Final Exam will contain 20 questions worth 10 points each along with three bonus problems worth 2 points each. The questions will come directly from the five tests (yes, with the exact same numbers). So review the five tests provided under Tests and Answers!! You will have up to 2 hours to take the Final Exam.
Note: You must complete Test #5 during the testing window as I will need to post the answers online at least one day prior to the final exam testing window for you all to study.
Problems due to the snow and ice? Read my comments below, under November 23rd.

Hi All,
Since the college (and our sister colleges) closed at 2 pm yesterday, I realize that many of you were unable to take Test #4 per your plans. The weather may end up causing troubles for the colleges tomorrow too. I know the Proctor Center has morning hours on Wednesday and I suspect the weather might close campus in the morning hours, if not all day...not for sure about this until tomorrow's weather stations announce the school closures.
Anyways, I think it is appropriate to postpone the testing deadline for Test #4 (but not for the certifies) until Monday, Nov. 29th. As far as I know, the proctor center is open on Saturday (not a holiday) ...Now, this means I will not be able to post the answers to test #4 before then, but the old test (last quarter's test) covers mostly the same materials and is good for review. Also, the certify on the chapter review is available for a study tool.
The testing window for the Test #4 Retake will be moved to Wednesday, Dec. 1st through Monday, Dec. 6th. Yes, this is during the same time that Test #5 must be taken. The testing winodws for Test #4 Retake and Test #5 will overlap! Reminder: There is no Test #5 Retake.
Enjoy the snow,, but do some math too
Happy Thanksgiving to you!

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Friday, November 19, 2010 Hi All,
As usual, the test (Test #4) was sent out on Tuesday. I want to remind you that Test #4 is the last test that will have a retake provided. Next Wednesday is the window for Test #4 Retake. However, the Test #5 testing window will be the following week. You must be up to date by then as no retakes are allowed for Test #5 or the final exam.
Hang in there, people, we are nearly to the end of the quarter. You still have the opportunity to get good grades on your tests and certifies. The final exam will consist of problems taken from Tests #1 - #5...yes, the exact same problems with the exact same numbers (corrected version if I originally made an error). Remember, copies of these tests are available for you to review and study under Tests and Answers here on the website.

Hi All,
The Test #3 Retakes have been sent to the proctors and proctor/testing centers. Also, Test #3 and Test #3 Answers have been posted on the class website. I have been ill with the flu for the past few days and am now back to work. This means I only just (this morning) received tests that have come in since last Friday. I will post the scores before noon tomorrow.
marjie : ) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tuesday, November 3, 2010 Hi All,
Yesterday I sent out Test #3 to the proctors and proctor/testing centers. Also, Test #2 and Test #2 Retake scores have been posted for all the tests I have received as of yesterday morning. I suggest you study and review the old test as usual.

Hi All,
Test #2 was placed in the proctor center and sent out to all your proctors or testing sites yesterday. I have updated all the grades online for Test #1 and the Test #1 Retakes. If you took both Test #1 and Test #1 Retake, then I recorded the higher of the two scores. Remember, if your score is 80 or higher, the Retake will not increase your grade. (See Retake Tests in the menu to the left.) Need help or have questions? Go to HOME and see HELP Resources. Feel free to contact me for an appointment or with a problem. I am available online and (if you are in the area) in person.

Finally found a working scanner on campus so the answers to Test #1 are posted now.

Hi All,
I have placed the Test #1 Retake in the Proctor Center for those of you who test there. For those of you who used a personal proctor, I will be sending them the Test #1 Retake in a few minute. I posted a copy of Test #1 under Tests and Answers. I am having difficulties with the scanner and can not post the answers yet...hope to do so later tonight or tomorrow...sorry about that. If you missed taking Test #1 completely due to whatever reason, then you need to take the Retake!
I am checking the Test #1 tonight and tomorrow and should have your grades posted by tomorrow evening. If your scores are lower than 80, then it is wise to retake the test, after reviewing. If you do not get your scores in time, but you feel you did poorly, then it won't hurt to take the retake. I always give you credit for the test with the higher score. Remember, the original test score can be 100 (or more if you get the bonus problems correct), but the highest you can get on a Retake is 80% (see Retake Tests in the menu on the left).

Hi All,
For those of you who have filled out the two forms in the menu on the left of this site, I have sent out Test #1 to your proctor or, as the case may be, placed a copy in the proctor center for you.
If you have NOT filled out the forms on the left, then there is no test ready for you. Since the Testing Window started today and ends on Monday, I strongly suggest you fill in the forms as soon as possible...you will need to email me that you have done so. Once I see you have let me know where you are testing/with whom you are testing, then I can provide the test. If you miss the test window, then you may take the Retake Test when it is available. If you have questions, let me know.
On the tests, you may only use one resource, your calculator. You do not need scratch paper or get to use any notes, etc. Test #1 has 10 questions on it and three bonus problems. The bonus problems do not count against you if you miss them. They are to be done only if you have time left before your testingn hour is up.
Questions? Let me know by emailing or calling me. Remember to use the subject line: Math 084 followed by your name.

Hi All,
I have updated all pages now.
I have included two Forms for you to fill out.
1. The first form is about you and your contact information. The Student Contact Info (Form) will provide me with your updated information (any recent changes should also be reported by you to the Registration office).
2. The second Form is about your Proctor information. Since the tests are pencil and paper tests, you will be taking them with a Proctor. I need to know where you plan to test or with whom so that I can provide the test to your proctor/proctor center choice in time for the first test. Be sue to read all the file on my website about Proctors and Testing before filling out the Proctor Choice (Form).
Please fill these forms out by Monday.Contact me if you have any questions about either form.
Under Testing Times & Topics you will find the testing windows. The first test is scheduled for next week. You may take the test at anytime during the testing window.
By now you should have purchased your book and the 2 disks or purchased the 2 disks or purchased and downloaded the software. You should also have installed the program on your computer(s). When you open to your Hawkes class page, you need to click on Chapter R, then click on Lesson R.1. For each lesson, it is expected that you go through the Explanation, then Practice and, finally, the Certify. Or, if you prefer working only out of the book, you read the lesson, do the odd-numbered or else the even-numbers problems and then go online to do the Certify for that lesson. You do not have to do all the practice or homework problems, but always practice on paper and always do as much as necessary to be sure you understand/can do the concept or process correctly.
Note that the online program has a few more options that the textbook...under Practice, you will have some options when you miss an answer...you can get a second chance, or take a hint to try again or see the problem worked out step by step.
Be sure to follow the specific order of materials listed underTesting Times & Topics. Generally, I would recommend you do one lesson each day or so. You can work at your own pace, but always keep in mind that there will be a test about every two weeks. Notice that my old tests are available for you to use for practice. Also, under HELP Resources you will see instructions about how to write your own testin Hawkes to practice.
In the lower right of your Hawkes Home page, you will see a tab labelled Progress Report. This is where you can see your grades as well as the due dates for the topics to be done. I do not grade homeword directly, but the work you do will be reflected in how well you do on each lesson's Certify. The "homework" grade is really the Certifies grade. When you take a Certify before the due date and earn a score of 75% or higher, then the grade is recorded as 100% (for competence shown). This gives you 10 points. If you take the Certify successfully after the due date, your score is 5 points. Otherwise, you get a score of 0 points. If you do not pass a Lesson's Certify, then go through the Explanation again, study and do more practice problems. You can then retake the Certify. You have three chances to pass the Certify and earn the 10 points for that Lesson.
Whew, that is enough for now! Any questions? Email me at mvjones@southseattle.edu and use the subject line: Math 084 - your name.
