Transitional ESL

South Seattle Community College offers 5 levels of non-credit ESL classes. Levels 1 and 2 include three sub-levels: A, B and C. Levels 3, 4 and 5 have two sub-levels: A and B.

Students are initially placed into non-credit ESL classes during Educational Interviews based on CASAS scores and other faculty assessments. Students who complete 5B are encouraged to continue their studies by enrolling in Transitional ESL. Faculty can find information on those classes by visiting the Transitional ESL Faculty Resources page.

Our division offers two general types of ESL courses, core classes and skill classes. Core classes are generally taught for 12 hours per week, meeting Monday through Thursday for 3 hours a day, and they generally take place in the mornings and evenings. Core classes cover a variety of topics and provide instruction on all four modalities. Level-by-level information on the core classes can be found in the menu to the left.

Skills classes are generally taught for 4 hours per week, and most often meet Monday through Thursday for 1 hour per day. They generally take place immediately following morning core classes, and they focus on specific modalities, such as speaking or writing, or on specific topics, such as ESL Computer Skills or ESL Math. Information on Skills classes can be found by selecting the ESL Skills Classes link in the menu to the left.
